Hey, I’m Shanita.
I am a Faith Based Marriage and Family Therapist (Trauma Recovery Specialist) (MFT, NCC, LMHC)

I am a former foster child, who was adopted in late adolescence. My story has deep roots, and for many years I carried emotional wounds. I felt rejection, pain, isolation, and fear among many other negative emotions. Often, the people I trusted to care for me betrayed that trust. It took many years to heal “heart wounds” unintentionally left by others. This sparked a fire within my heart to assist others in their healing journey. God has walked with me through all of the fires! Today, I am a wife and a mother to four (4) beautiful children. I have learned to roll with the billows and embrace the challenges that come with life. I enjoy spending time with others and hearing about their experiences. Not every story is pretty, but all are worth living to the fullest! My life is a testimony of the work of my Father’s hands and showcase that God can produce beauty in dark places.

Like many people I have worn many professional hats over the years. For a few years I worked as a support to family members charged with the care of their loved ones who were diagnosed with cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, MS, and Parkinson's. I also worked with families who were managing dual diagnosis of mental health and neurodegenerative diagnoses to manage caretaker fatigue and avoid burnout by connecting them to community resources that could assist in providing loving-care to their aging loved ones in their delicate state. Joining with them in their caretaking struggles to deeper understand their needs and provide emotional support. I assisted in guiding families through caring for loved ones placed in hospice, helping those in hospice come to terms with the end of life, and connecting their families to services to help them navigate the grieving process when loss occurred. I held a few temporary positions in other areas of the humanities field as well and carry the knowledge and experience I gained with me.
While I have loved every position that I worked in over the years, I became passionate about psychology and faith integrated counseling in 2015. I hold a lifetime of experience in navigating and healing trauma and emotional wounds, backed by two separate degrees, a BS in Christian Counseling, and another BS in Crisis Intervention & Trauma Recovery. I officially entered the Mental Health field as a social worker in 2016. There were many disadvantages I saw for the communities I served and it moved my heart to pursue further education, so that I could serve my community on an even deeper level. I completed my internship with Pinebrook Family Answers and my Master’s in Marriage & Family Therapy in 2021 from Liberty University. I am certified and trained through the Gottman Institute and hold other certifications for marriage counseling.
I have worked with adults, youth, and their families and provided trauma informed care to help them navigate long term illnesses, adoption, re-homing, and delinquency. I also volunteered as a peer counselor for some time through various agencies and as crisis response. The idea of helping individuals and families heal from generational trauma and move into healthy functioning has driven me to open up my own Christian Counseling Practice. God has placed a deep desire on my heart to encourage individuals and families to engage in their present, heal wounds from the past, and look forward to a brighter tomorrow.
